Cottage Industry x Penelope Durston: Merino/Possum Socks
It’s taken us a while to finally get these into the shop and online, but finally I just gave up on the dyeing (for now, there will be colours) and decided to release the first batch in the natural buff possum colour…. Sometimes I just make things too difficult for myself and can’t see the product for all the extra bits that need to be done to make it ‘finished’. This time has meant that we’ve been able to foot-test these socks and get feedback from our test-possums…. and the results are in…. ‘like fluffy clouds on your feet’ has been the most popular response.
The yarn for these socks has been specially spun for us in New Zealand from fine merino and Brushtail possum fibre. It has been treated so that we are able to boil dye it and this means you can machine wash these. Mind you as a natural wool fibre sock they don’t need to be washed after every wear.
Just like our Angora/lambswool gloves these are knitted in our studio in Fitzroy and we use Japanese lycra yarn for stretch and return. We’ve developed three sizes (small, medium and large) but they have a great deal of stretch so they are super forgiving and if you are in between sizes it might be worth opting for the smaller size.
The cuff has been designed not to pinch on the calf and is a mock rib that is super comfy to wear. We know this is an issue for many of you so we’ve tried to make it as comfy as possible.
Sizes:
Small EU35-39
Medium EU40-44
Large EU44-47
Content: 57% merino wool 22% Brushtail Possum, 12% elastane, 9% nylon
Cold machine wash. Line dry…. but I’ll let you in on a secret, I’ve also been popping mine in the dryer and they are coming out beautiful! Always err on the side of caution though! I like to treat our products mean to see the worst that you can do to them and I’ve been very happy with my abuse of these socks.
Always remember to keep your toenails cut and your heels sandpapered, and be aware that an individual’s shoes and feet will rub the socks in different ways. We’ve tested these and are very happy with how they have held up to the abuse I’ve put them through!
And a word about possum fibre from our yarn supplier: ‘Our brushtail possum fibres are ethically sourced, and our approach to managing the brushtail possum population is endorsed by the New Zealand Government as an effective way to protect our ecosystem. Our practices to collect brushtail possum fibre adhere to best practice guidelines and the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS), ensuring that our collection processes are ethical, humane, and transparent. By responsibly removing this invasive pest, we help preserve New Zealand’s natural environment.’
